I remember reading about Pareto Principle or more commonly known as 80–20 Rule during my Masters. After I started my professional journey, I saw it in the Large- Scale project scenario as well. Let’s go through it together to understand and identify what kind of team you’re either managing or working it.
My understanding of this rule in terms of team and work management is as follows:
→ In effective and self-managed teams, 80% of the work is taken up by the all the team members and 20% effort is spent on improving the solutions and mentoring the team with little oversight and guidance by specialist team members.
→ In ineffective and micro-managed teams, 80% of the work is assigned to 20% people, and their remaining 20% time is spent on fixing issues created by rest of the 80% team members. In such teams, guidance and mentorship is rare as people are often busy fixing the issues or struggling to stay motivated.
Over the time I realized that 80–20 Rule has been evolved and transformed into 20–40–40 Rule. Here is what I understood about this rule:
